Our second year with Rocket began quite routine, finally. We spent as much time walking in our community or hiking a trail as we could. Although a year older, Rocket still had lots of energy and getting him outside to play, hike, or visit my parents were always great ways to expend some of that energy. Every Sunday, we would head to Mom & Dad’s house for dinner. There, Rocket could run and play with his brother, Hoppy. They could swim in the river and fetch sticks. They liked to race for toys and chase each other constantly.
Yes, Rocket and Hoppy are not only brothers, but they are best buddies. They look so much alike that we sometimes have to look twice before we can tell which one is which. Hoppy is a bit bigger and much calmer, but when they are together, they play hard. Hoppy learned to swim first, then Rocket. Once Rocket learned to swim, there was no stopping him. He can fetch a stick in the water all day long, and when day ends, he sleeps like a baby! Rocket gets lots of attention at Grandma’s house, especially from Grandpa. Grandpa and Grandma both like to give out treats to all visiting dogs, and Grandpa expects perfect “sits” in exchange for these treats. The highlight of the day is dinner, and grandma always has a special meal for the visiting pups. Each meal is served on paper plates and served by Grandma, personally.
Visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s house is the highlight of the week for both Rocket and Frank. After a full afternoon of playing, swimming, begging for treats, and resting in the shade on hot summer days, Rocket is content and ready to head home for an evening of cuddles. As we explore our second year with Rocket, life becomes much more routine and, sometimes, a little boring. Work keeps us busy, and Rocket has learned how to behave. Despite still wanting to be the center of attention and using his rump to push Frank aside, Rocket has become an almost ideal pup. It is obvious that he tries very hard to please us and to be a good dog. We look forward to this next year with Rocket with confidence, pride, and the expectation of an almost normal day-to-day life!
